What is the ‘We will sort this’ campaign?
Great to have you on board with our campaign! We believe that sorting waste is like riding a bike: once you learn it, you never forget. This gave us the idea of the ‘We will sort this’ campaign.
Sorting habits in childhood homes vary a lot. Some families don’t sort anything separately, while in others, all waste goes into the correct collection bin. When you move out on your own for the first time, you have the opportunity to create new habits or maintain the good (or not-so-good) routines you learned at home. The choice is entirely yours!
The ‘We will sort this’ campaign encourages you to choose sorting. Environmental actions will be increasingly important in the future, and every correctly sorted waste is a victory for both nature and people.
Why should you sort your waste?
Even if you live alone or feel that waste is not generated much in your home it’s a fact that very few of us can live waste-free. Groceries and takeout food come in wraps, fruits are peeled, and food waste is generated. For example, if all single individuals were correctly sorting most of their waste, a large amount of properly sorted waste would accumulate from these small quantities.
So, why is sorting so important? A significant portion of waste is actually raw material. When sorted correctly, we can keep materials in circulation and reduce the need for virgin raw materials.
Sorting your biowaste results in environmentally friendly, renewable fuel. Some waste trucks run on BIG biogas. This way, your coffee grounds and banana peels reduce greenhouse gas emissions from transportation. Biowaste is also turned into fertilizers for domestic food production. Sorted glass and cardboard become new packaging materials, and recycled plastic can be used for things like trash bags and buckets.
Make a choice
The climate crisis won’t be solved by wishful thinking. On our collective journey towards a sustainable circular economy, every action matters. You can decide to be part of the solution by sorting your waste correctly. We at Pirkanmaan Jätehuolto ensure that they are utilized in the best possible way.
We will sort this!
Sorting on recycling?
In everyday language, we often hear phrases like “I recycle all my waste” or “I don’t recycle plastic.” This is why the term “sorting” used by waste management professionals can be confusing.
Waste recycling is the process of turning waste into new products. However, recycling cannot function effectively unless its crucial component, sorting, is done correctly. Therefore, the act of sorting every piece of waste into its designated containers at home and placing them in the right collection bins in your backyard or at a waste collection point is of paramount importance for the success of recycling.
Even though waste management professionals prefer term “sorting,” it’s perfectly fine in everyday language to talk about “recycling.” What matters most is getting the job well done!
