Biogas plant Biomylly

The Biomylly processes the biowaste 17 municipalities

Pirkanmaan Jätehuolto´s biogas plant, known as Biomylly, operates at the Koukkujärvi waste centre in Nokia. The plant handles organic waste from 17 municipalities and the sewage sludge from Nokia city. The plant has two separate lines: a dry line for organic waste and a wet line for sludge.

From biowaste, it produces BIG biogas and fertilizers

BIG biogas is a local, renewable, and low-emission energy source that replaces fossil fuels. Depending on the calculation method, using biogas in transportation reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90% compared to gasoline or diesel.

Biogas is used in waste collection trucks instead of fossil fuels, resulting in a reduction of 1,900 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually. As of 2022, there are already fifteen gas-powered waste collection trucks in operation for Pirkanmaan Jätehuolto, and the number increases each year.

BIG biogas is produced locally from the region’s biowaste but can be refueled throughout Finland. Biogas is also sold to private car owners. The biogas produced annually by the bioplant would be enough to drive around the Earth 1000 times.

A passenger car can travel approximately 4 km with the energy from one biowaste bag (2 kg). The nutrients from one biowaste bag can grow enough rye to make a 400 g rye bread!
